The 80/20 Rule for Consistent Progress

January is synonymous with resolutions. Every year, the top three goals remain the same: lose weight, eat differently, and start working out. Yet despite the best intentions, research suggests fewer than 9% of people actually stick to their New Year's resolutions.

The 80/20 rule—eating well 80% of the time and allowing flexibility the other 20%—helps you make lasting progress without burnout.

Why it works: Strict diets often backfire because they're unsustainable. When you allow yourself the occasional treat or relaxed meal, you're more likely to stick to healthy eating overall. The 80% keeps you on track; the 20% keeps you sane.

How to apply it: Focus on whole foods, vegetables, lean protein, and balanced meals most of the time. Use your 20% for social meals, favourite snacks, or days when you need a break.
